Collect Moments, Not Things

I hope you are enjoying this cozy time of year. With so many activities, gatherings, family traditions, and gifts to plan — there’s so much to keep track of!

Gift-giving is such a wonderful part of this joyful holiday season. But it can quickly become a stressful part of the festivities, which is why I want to give you a quick reminder about mindful gift-giving.

As a professional organizer who goes into homes daily to help people declutter, I wanted to remind you that you don’t always have to give physical gifts.

My favorite kind of gift to give and receive is an experience — an activity that creates memories instead of dust and clutter. There’s no better gift than spending time together!

Recently, I was scrolling through Instagram, and I saw a video about a delicious French bakery that offers kosher baking classes. The pastries looked unreal — flakey croissants and cream-filled dough scattered with chocolate chips. The best part? You get to take everything home with you! 😊

I immediately thought of my daughter and daughter-in-law, who both enjoy baking — My Hanukkah gift this year (shhh, don’t tell them!) is a ladies’ night in the city for the baking class and a delicious dinner afterward. I can’t wait to spend time with them, making new memories — and pain suisse au chocolat! Yum!

A few years ago, I was working beside a cozy fireplace in my favorite local coffee shop and saw a flyer for guitar lessons. My husband’s birthday was approaching, and he’d always talked about wanting to try learning the guitar.

The timing felt like kismet, so I quickly booked a few sessions. He was so surprised when I gave him the lessons for his birthday and loved trying something new that he’d always wondered about.

One of my favorite gifts to receive is a peaceful weekend getaway. To celebrate anniversaries or other special occasions, we’ll sometimes book a cabin in the Poconos to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Hopefully, these stories help inspire you to think outside the gift box this holiday season. I created an experience gift guide to help you think of other ideas, too!

When I’m helping people at home, kids’ bedrooms are especially packed with stuff. Consider an experience gift for them as well!

They’re also perfect for last-minute gift ideas because you can usually purchase them electronically, which means no shipping delays!

I hope these ideas help you stress less and welcome more joy and cheer into your home this holiday season.

May this season bring you the gifts of peace, hope, and joy, and may your nests be filled with love and laughter.
